  • The suspension of a student from Muhoho High School in Gatundu South caused an uproar on social media after he was ordered to buy 1000 loaves of bread.

The Form three student was sent home by the school’s deputy principal last Thursday, February 15 after allegedly stealing bread from the school’s dining hall.

In the suspension letter, the student was ordered to return with 1000 loaves, which according to the school is enough to feed the entire institution.

The student was also required to ensure he cleared all his outstanding school fees before he is re-admitted back to the school.

“You are required to return to school the soonest possible at 9 am having cleared all the school levies and come with bread for all the students in the school i.e. 1000 loaves,” read the letter in part.

With a loaf of bread currently retailing at Sh 50, it means that the student’s parent will be required to pay a whopping Sh50,000 to purchase the loaves required by the school management.

The demands of the school elicited sharp reactions from Kenyans on social media with many terming the punishment as punitive and uncalled for.

Others argued that the punishment did not teach the student anything but it was rather a punishment to the parents or guardians.

Online users also recommended that a lesser punishment to the student would be fair and a lesson would be learnt.

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed was also called upon to revise the expulsion.
