Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter Charged with 11 Serious Crimes

Nandi Hills Member of Parliament (MP) Alfred Keter was on Monday arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts to answer to 11 counts of forgery and conspiracy to defraud.

Alongside Arthur Sakwa and Madat Chatur, the three denied all 11 charges brought against them as outlined on their charge sheets.

"On February 16, 2018, at the Central Bank of Kenya in Nairobi, within Nairobi County, jointly with others, not before the court conspired with an intent to defraud CBK by means of presenting forged Treasury Bills valued at Sh286 Million," the charge sheet outlined on the first count.

The document further accused the three of having colluded with other individuals unknown to the court in making the forged document.

According to the charges, the three presented a second forged T-Bill valued at Sh347 Million purported to have been issued and signed by CBK's National Debt Office Registrar, Maina Warui.

The three have further been charged with fraudulently declaring the T-Bills to be authentic before CBK's Director of Legal Services, Kaunda Abuga.

They were later released on a cash bail of Sh2 Million each with the condition that they make a weekly visit to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

MP Keter remained in custody over the weekend following his dramatic arrest at the former CBK grounds on Friday.

Defending himself, the lawmaker stated that he had reported to the CBK after an invitation by the bank's Governor Patrick Njoroge alleging that he had been set up by "well-connected" people.

"I am convinced that my arrest and subsequent humiliation before the media was purposefully designed to cover up the fraud committed against Desai Industries owners.

"I am neither a director nor a shareholder of Desai Industries on whose behalf the Treasury Bills were presented. Why then was I arrested?" the parliamentarian posed.
