Chief Justice David Maraga Goes After Christians in Kenya

Chief Justice, David Maraga, on Monday took a swipe at Christians whom he noted are just religious by profession and lack authenticity to serve in the public service.

Speaking at Kenyatta University in Nairobi during the 'Being a Leader Workshop', he accused the judiciary and political class of portraying the leadership that 'preaches water and drinks wine'.

"It is sad that a country boasts of 80 percent of its population being Christian yet it is common knowledge that corruption is a pandemic," he asserted.

Maraga, who is also the President of the Supreme Court of Kenya noted that real change would occur when people practice true Christianity.

"Public resources are shamelessly being plundered by leaders without as much as giving thought to the poor who are in dire need of them.

"As a result, hundreds of thousands are dying of hunger and dying of diseases that are not only preventable but also curable," he conveyed.

He, however, acknowledged that human beings are imperfect and dishonest but argued that great leadership is grounded on integrity and is a result of the urge to do what our respective consciences dictate.

"In my humble view, such leadership can only come from one, whatever his religion, in the innermost of whom is the fear of God; one who constantly seeks to do the will of God in the discharge of his or her mandate.

"As leaders, we can only achieve if we live out the values we endeavor to pass on. We cannot make any headway if we purport to preach water while drinking wine," the CJ stated.

He, therefore, stated that there is a need for conferences and training which inspire confidence and impact societal affairs while emphasizing that leadership is not inherited.
