Police Demand Sh253 Million From Government for Car Loans

The National Police Service Commission has asked for Sh253.9 Million from the government for car loans and mortgages into the next financial year.

Police CEO Joseph Onyango told the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and National Security that the staff was entitled to gratuity and mortgages.

He also argued that the Sh20 Million allocated for car loans and mortgages is only enough for one member of staff.

Chairman Johnston Kavuludi stated that they planned to lease 20 vehicles since they were given insufficient funds in the current financial year – Sh21 Million – for maintenance of motor vehicles.

He further told the National Assembly that the commission needed Sh450 Million in the next financial year for construction of its own offices.

“The lease for our current office expires next year. But upon completion of the new office premises, the Commission will save Sh75 Million annually, being the cost of renting office space,” Kavuludi stated.

In addition, the Commission asked for Sh87.5 Million for the establishment of a counselling unit to cater for psychological health in the police service.

They further asked Parliament to allocate Sh150 Million for decentralisation of their services.

Kavuludi stated: “In order to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services to the National Police Service officers, there is need to establish field-based offices in nine regions outside Nairobi.”
