BAT Kenya boss Beverley Obatoyinbo Married Husband Because he Wore a Tie

British American Tobacco Kenya boss, Beverley Spencer-Obatoyinbo, recently disclosed that she got married to her husband because he wore a tie.

Speaking to popular columnist Jackson Biko, Ms Spencer revealed that she met her Nigerian husband at a nightclub soon after she completed her campus education.

"He tells people that we met in the library, and that’s not true. We met at a trendy nightclub in London. He was wearing a black tie and I thought this is a strange dressing to wear to this club. His dressing was one of the reasons we got chatting that night and we haven’t stopped talking years later," Spencer commented after she was asked how she met him.

During the interview with Business Daily, the Managing Director further divulged the struggles of being in an intercultural marriage.

Spencer noted that although she was not immediately accepted by her husband's Yoruba tribe, she is proud of having been able to raise "two boys who are very balanced, exposed culturally, and transition easily between different places."

The MD expressed her love for African artwork citing one Bruce Onobrakpeya from Nigeria as one of her favorites, advising art lovers to check him out.

Jokingly, she stated: "If my house was on fire, I will tell my husband, 'you better run because I’m going to save that picture'.’’

Although she is only 10 months old in her role, she has served BAT for 22 years now.

Spencer has previously worked for BAT in Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Réunion Island, Somalia, Rwanda, and Uganda.

She replaced Keith Gretton who retired in March 2017 from the cigarette manufacturer after serving in the position for less than two years.
