Fazul Mahamed Resigns as NGO Board CEO

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Board Executive Director Fazul Mahamed on Monday announced his resignation from the position after serving for three years.

In a letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Mr Mahamed outlined that the resignation would take effect on May 1, 2018.

"It is with deep regret that I submit my notice of resignation as Executive Director of the NGOs Coordination Board effective May 1, 2018.

"During the past three years, my tenure at the Board has been nothing short of pure excitement and joy," his letter read in part.

Assuring his support in facilitating a smooth transition, the outgoing Director encouraged the government's Board to faithfully execute its mandate.

"I would like to wish the Board the very best in its endeavours of creating an enabling environment for the thriving of the charity sector and for the continuous demand for greater accountability and transparency among NGOs," the letter charged.

Mr Mahamed has struck news headlines in the past after his organisation clamped down on former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka's foundation on claims of misuse of funds.

Under his leadership, the Board would later freeze funds to Ms Rosemary Odinga's foundation on claims of receiving funds as a front for the National Super Alliance (NASA).

Mr Mahamed's term at the NGO Board expired on November 23, 2017. Following his failure to resign, activist Okiya Omtatah moved to court seeking to obtain orders barring the Interior Cabinet Secretary from reappointing him.

Justice Hellen Wasilwa granted interim orders on the matter barring Fazul from accessing his office or carrying out any functions as Director of the board.
