NASA Cancels Meeting of People's Assembly

National Super Alliance (NASA) People's Assembly steering committee has cancelled a planned National People's Convention (NPC) following wrangles within the coalition.

On Saturday Dr Oduor Ongwen had assured supporters that the new date would be announced at the beginning of the week.

On Monday, however, he announced that the committee had not come up with a date yet further brewing uncertainty over the NPC plan.

"As a committee, we shall meet this week to finalise on the programme and agenda of the day.

"The date may vary a little but we will announce the road-map with all the details," Dr Ongwen explained.

Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Godfrey Osotsi emphasised that coalition's position adding that the most important part of its mandate had been fulfilled.

"What matters is the resolve of the people which is there. The setting up of the convention where a number of issues will be put on the table is still on.

"We have already sworn in our president and we now need a council under him to help him in his work," he explained.

NASA's affiliated parties have been at loggerheads over the swearing-in of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka

Wiper's acting Secretary-General Peter Mathuki expressed further doubts over the involvement of his party in the matter.

"The initial plan was for the process to be undertaken in stages. We were to first have the people’s assemblies, then hold the convention where issues of reforms were to be deliberated upon before the swearing in of the people’s president.

"Now that the swearing in has happened there may be no need for the convention," he stated.
