IPOA Goes After Police who Allegedly Killed Meru University Student Leader

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the killing of a Meru University student leader.

Evans Njoroge, Secretary General of Meru University Student Association, was allegedly gunned down at close range on Tuesday as he attempted to flee from police.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, IPOA maintained that it had dispatched its Rapid Response Unit to investigate the incident.

The police watchdog unit also added that they were seeking to establish the circumstances of the shooting and if the police are found culpable, they will be tried in a court of law.

The late Njoroge was shot dead during protests against high school fees and poor learning conditions at the institution.

Students from the campus had been sent home following persistent protests over high school fees, had barricaded the Meru-Maua road protesting the announcement of reporting dates.

The Student Association Secretary-General was allegedly chased down by police before being shot dead on a farm during the protest.

The University Vice-Chancellor, Japheth Magambo, told journalists that he was not aware of any death.
