Majority Leader Aden Duale Warns Media Against Misusing Jubilee Party Name

Majority leader Aden Duale on Wednesday warned journalists against misreporting that the proposed amendment bill seeking to extend the President's term in office and creation of the position of the prime minister was drafted by a Jubilee MP.

The Garissa Township MP clarified that the author of the bill, Tiaty MP William Kassait Kamket hails from the Kenya African National Union (KANU) and warned journalists against using the Jubilee Party to sensationalise the story.

"I, therefore caution the media to desist from misreporting on such matters by ensuring they come out with the correct information and facts as opposed to using the ruling Jubilee Party in sensationalising their reporting.

"Kamket is a Kanu MP and the records are very clear. And therefore the proposed bill which he seeks to bring to the house is not a Jubilee party sponsored bill," he stated.

In addition, he affirmed that any MP had a right to come up with a bill but clarified that fate of the bill would be decided by all legislators through a vote.

"Therefore, I wish to make it very clear that Kamket has in his private capacity just like any other MP is expected to do come up with the proposed bill," Duale noted.

He also maintained that the Jubilee Party did not hold any discussion with the Tiaty MP regarding the proposed bill.

"If that was to happen, we shall communicate loud and clear as we have always done in our deliberations," Duale asserted.

The Garissa Township MP issued the statement a day after the KANU MP drafted a bill proposing that the Presidential seat be a ceremonial figure and the head of state to serve for a single seven-year term.

In the proposed amendment, Parliament will be allowed to provide the position of Prime Minister, leader of the Opposition, and members of the shadow Cabinet.

The drafted bill also sought the removal of the office of the Deputy President's office.
