How Nairobi's Gaza Gang is Using Babies to Lure Victims

Nairobi's Gaza gang, which mostly operates in Eastlands area, is one of the most feared criminal groups in the country and investigations have revealed how the gangsters are using babies to lure victims.

In an interview with a local publication, a member of the gang divulged that they use nursing mothers since no one suspects them.

Apparently, female members of the gang pinch their babies to make them cry outside business premises or residential houses, forcing targets to come out.

“We use babies to bait our victims because we know that Kenyans would not suspect a nursing mother to be a criminal and are easily moved by a crying baby,” stated a member of the gang who operates at Masimba Stage in Kayole.

It is alleged that women who have been recruited into the gang also avoid breastfeeding for unknown reasons.

Investigations further revealed that most robberies take place early in the morning and late in the evening, and those targetted are mainly M-Pesa operators and mama mbogas going to buy wares in the morning.

“Most of us now send money via M-Pesa to our vegetable suppliers and only carry Sh200 for transport.

"When you meet the young boys and girls, they just slap you and let you go,” a resident was quoted by the Standard.

For ease of identification, members of the gang mostly put on open shoes, have tear-drop tattoos and three cuts on either side of the eyebrows.

In 2017, two suspects including George Mwaniki alias Mwanii were killed after being trailed by officers following a botched robbery in Kayole area.

Mwanii was the husband of slain female gangster Clare Njoki aka Clea Adi Vybz. She was killed in May along Kangundo road.

According to police, Mwanii was the ringleader of Gaza.
