Kennedy Ogeto, who was recently nominated as the next Solicitor General by President Uhuru Kenyatta, once wanted to be a matatu driver.
Mr Ogeto was raised in a humble background which he narrated to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee during his vetting session for the position.
A Solicitor General serves as the principal assistant to the Attorney General and as the accounting officer of the State Law Office.
“I wanted to be a matatu driver because I just admired them but whenever I told my mother she would not listen to me and never gave up. I would run away from school and she would bring me back. The fact that she never caned me gave me time to reflect,” he explained to the committee.

He recounted that he wanted to abandon school altogether but his mother advised him against it as she was a big believer in education and wanted the best for her 10 children.
Ogeto adopted his poor attitude for school as early as high school when he was admitted to Gekano Secondary School which was one of the best schools in Nyamira.
He was later transferred to Menyeya High School which was a Harambee school at the time.
Eventually, he joined the University of Nairobi for his law degree and graduated with an Upper Second Class Honours in 1989 and went on to obtain a Master Degree.
Today, Mr Ogeto is a highly respected city lawyer with a 27-year span of experience in private practice.
He is currently the managing partner of Ogeto, Otachi and Company Advocates and sits on the Kenya Ports Authority Board as well as Ecobank’s board. He, however, promised to resign from all these positions as soon as he is appointed. He will be replacing outgoing Solicitor General Njee Muturi.
