Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr. Reports Musicians to DPP, NCIC

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has reported 2 artists and the production company behind an offensive Kikuyu-dialect music video to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

The song, by Isaiah and Waharaka, ignited outrage online as it mocks the Kamba community and Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu over the recent ban on charcoal trade and the burning of vehicles ferrying it in Kitui.

The artists can be heard singing, in Kikuyu, that 'Kambas only feed on mangoes and when mango season is over, they will feed on dogs'.

In his letters to the DPP and the NCIC, Senator Mutula demanded the arrest of the artists for hate speech and incitement.

"In any event, the artists of the said music video should be arrested and charged forthwith for exciting ethinc hatred and spewing vitriol to a whole community with no justifiable cause," Mutula wrote.

Since Ngilu's ban on charcoal trade was put in place, two vehicles carrying charcoal in Kitui have been set ablaze by angry residents.

This sparked protests from traders and transporters in Kiambu County, who accused Ngilu of inciting residents to torch the vehicles.

Last week, protesters in Naivasha paralyzed traffic on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway as they deflated tires and demanded Ngilu's arrest.

On Monday, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu took Ngilu to court over the alleged incitement.

Ngilu has maintained that the ban is only meant to conserve the environment, accusing cartels making money from charcoal of fighting her.
