CS Amina Mohamed Confesses Mistake That Cost Education Ministry Sh7.5 Billion

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed admitted that the ministry procured books with multiple errors that cost the government Sh7.5 Billion.

The ministry procured 33 million books to facilitate the new syllabus but when scrutinised, they had multiple errors and could not be used by learners.

Addressing journalists at the Meru University of Science and Technology, CS Amina affirmed that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) was addressing the issue.

The CS admitted that indeed, some hiccups were anticipated in the pilot programme but the ministry would keenly look into avoiding such mistakes.

CS Amina told the media: “It was a pilot targeting 470 schools and if there are hiccups, they will be addressed.''

She also added: "At the end of the trial period, we will come out and tell Kenyans how we will move forward with the curriculum.”

Teachers had complained about the mix-up in the books that were issued to Form One students stating some had units meant to be covered in Form Two and higher classes.

The Physics and Kiswahili books were identified as having the most errors.

KICD Director for Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Cyril Oyugi confirmed this in an article published in a local daily, stating that the institute had noted multiple errors in some of the books but that mechanisms had been put in place to rectify them.

“Teams have been formed to look at the mistakes and they are doing corrections. That will be solved,” Oyugi stated.
