Health CS Sicily Kariuki Evicts Staff at Afya House to Create Office Kitchen

The Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Sicily Kanini Kariuki has attracted outrage after reports emerged that she had evicted senior staff at Afya House to create room for her office.

According to reports by The Star, the Health CS has cleared the seventh floor at Afya House to create space for the "grand office."

This has reportedly seen senior officials in the ministry including the Chief Finance Officer, Chief Dental Specialist, Under Secretary for medical equipment, senior deputy secretary and head of mental health relocated to other floors.

The office that is set to occupy over three-quarters of the floor will come complete with a kitchen, a changing room and meeting rooms.

Senior officials are said to have lamented the prudence of CS Kariuki taking three-quarters of the floor while the other staff were overcrowding in the building.

Currently, her office is located on the sixth floor and construction is ongoing on the seventh floor with the flooring of among other things, the boardroom.

Preceding Health Ministers including Cleopa Mailu, James Macharia, and Beth Mugo have operated from the sixth floor throughout their tenure at Afya House.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had warned CSs against lavishness during their swearing-in reminding them that assuming office as heads of ministries required adherence to servant leadership.

"High Office is not a platform for self-actualization and pandering to ego; it is a rare calling, a precious honour bestowed on so very few,” Uhuru had cautioned.

The CS came under heavy criticism on Tuesday with a section of Members of Parliament (MPs) threatening to impeach her for suspending Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) CEO Lilian Koros after a head surgery was conducted on the wrong patient.
