Donald Trump Fires Rex Tillerson as US Secretary of State

United States President (US) Donald Trump has fired the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson a day after he left Kenya.

Through his Twitter account, Trump noted that he had replaced Mr Tillerson with Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Mike Pompei.

Pompei will also be replaced at the CIA by Gina Haspel, who will be the first woman to lead the agency.

According to Washington Post, Trump had asked Tillerson to resign on Friday when he was in Kenya during his African tour.

The reports also indicate that he wanted to replace Tillerson before he began talks with Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Other reports reveal that Tillerson threatened to resign on Saturday while in Kenya, the same day he cancelled events after being 'taken ill'.

Upon his arrival in Kenya on Friday, the US Secretary complained of an illness which forced him to cancel events he was scheduled to undertake on the second day of his three-day visit.

After jetting into the country on Friday, he met President Uhuru Kenyatta where they highlighted the long-standing US-Kenya cooperation on counterterrorism, regional security, and trade.

He later held a media briefing at the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel, where he praised the talks between President Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga, adding that the reconciliation was a major milestone in consolidating national unity.

He also met Foreign Affairs CS Monica Juma and her Tourism counterpart Najib Balala in Nairobi.

During the meeting, Tillerson and the CSs sought to elaborate on ways to manage and deepen the relations between Kenya and the US on a wide range of areas of cooperation.

The talks, which were a follow up to the bilateral meeting held with the President, also sought to review the state of Kenya-US relations.
