Activist Okiya Omtatah Arrested at Milimani Law Courts

Activist Okiya Omtatah has been arrested at Milimani Law Courts.

According to reports reaching Kenyans.co.ke, Omtatah was taken to Kilimani Police Station.

On Thursday, a court in Nairobi issued an arrest warrant against the activist for failing to appear before it in a criminal case against him.

Omtatah had gone to court following a petition he had filed challenging Parliament for giving the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) powers to investigate corruption cases.

The activist had previously been arrested for possessing Government confidential documents.

The documents are alleged to have been the ones he presented in court on Petition No 58 of 2014 on the Standard Gauge Railway.

He was apprehended by CID officers who detained him as he waited to be arraigned in court later on charges of possessing the confidential documents.

Last week, he told Justice George Odunga, Chacha Mwita and John Mativo that the Constitution does not allow Parliament a free hand to create a Commission as a crime-busting entity.

Omtatah had accused the EACC of “killing” serious crime through shoddy investigations citing scams such as the theft at NYS and loss of funds at Afya House.

He further noted that EACC can only ensure compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution and once it encounters corruption, they should report it to the police.
