5 Killed in Kitui After Flash Floods

Five people have died after they were swept away by flash floods in Mwingi East Constituency, Kitui County.

The area OCPD, Munene, confirmed the incident adding that they died as they attempted to cross River Enziu.

Mr Munene explained that the river banks unexpectedly broke due the heavy rains experienced in the area.

Reports indicate that the five were on a lorry transporting charcoal before being washed away by floods.

“Those who were in the lorry tried to climb up but the water was too much. It covered the lorry and washed them away,” an eyewitness revealed.

The five had been reported missing on Wednesday after the lorry they were in was swept away by flood waters.

"Lorry with five people on board swept away after River Enzui in Kasiluni village, Kitui, burst its banks," Red Cross wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, a student died after flash floods swept away five students in Mai Mahiu area on Tuesday evening.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a report which indicates that heavy rains will be experienced in most parts of the country until March 19th.

In Nairobi, morning rains are expected to continue, and the showers will be relatively heavier in the second half of the forecast period.
