Suspect Demands Refund of Sh200,000 Bribe in Court

There was drama at a Machakos Law court when a robbery suspect demanded a Sh200,000 refund for a bribe he had paid to police who had failed to secure his release.

The suspect Jacob Mutinda Kilonzo told Kithimani Senior Resident Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe that he had an agreement with the arresting officers to kill the case - a deal they later reneged on.

"I was escorted from the police station to KCB Matuu branch in a police vehicle and taken back to custody after withdrawing Sh200,000, which was to be shared between the police officers and the complainant to settle the case and get me freed.

"Your honour, now that I have been produced in court, please help me get back the Sh200,000 I gave. because it was meant to secure my freedom," he told the court.

Kilonzo even presented a bank slip of the alleged withdrawal which showed the transaction took place on March 8 as proof of the bribe.

Following the stunning revelation, Justice Shikwe ordered the suspect to record a statement with the police.

He further directed the matter to be investigated by the Director of Investigations in Matuu.

Kilonzo was arraigned together with Kelvin Mutunga, Samson Mutavi, Solomon Mutuku and Mwandikwa Sulai with each accused of two counts of burglary and theft.

They were accused of breaking into and entering an electronic shop belonging to Michael Matheka and stealing goods worth Sh350,000.

The second charge states that the suspects stole goods worth Sh675,000 from the businessman.
