Speaker Justin Muturi Elected President of African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has been elected President of the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) during a meeting held in Accra, Ghana.

Muturi, who was voted in absentia, revealed that he will work on three critical agenda to ensure a corruption-free Africa.

In an acceptance speech read by Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabir, Muturi stated that his first objective would be ensuring peaceful and decent life for all the people while advocating for a sustainable planet and a continent free of corruption.

On his election, Muturi noted that he would make advocacy for strong parliamentary oversight that will enable the detection, exposure and prevention of corruption across the continent a priority during his tenure.

Lastly, the Speaker noted that he would also seek donor support and partnerships to ensure availability of adequate funds to undertake APNAC activities.

In a bid to strengthen APNAC as a caucus, he plans to endeavour in networking with his fellow Speakers in African Parliaments, African Union, Pan African Parliament, and Inter-parliamentary Union.

Muturi, who is serving a second term as the speaker of the National Assembly, also got elected in January 2018 as a member of the Standing Committee of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) representing East Africa.

He has served in the Speaker's position since 2013 and has also in the past represented Siakago Constituency as the Member of Parliament, as well as being the opposition chief whip.

Formerly a member of the judiciary and a principal magistrate, Muturi equally served as the chair of the Judges and Magistrates Association.

Other than being a member of the APNAC, he has also been a member the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption.
