Police Reveal Identity of Man Behind Money Scam Against MPs Posing as Sabina Chege

  • Police on Thursday revealed the prime suspect in a scam against Members of Parliament (MP) as 25-year-old Wazir Benson Masubo Chacha.

Mr Chacha has been accused of sending nude photographs as well as coordinating a scheme where funds were solicited from parliamentarians while posing as Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege.

The 25-year-old supposedly gained access to the politicians during his tenure at the Ministry of Devolution.

Police believe that his friendship with a former legislator assisted him in collecting the personal contact information about the public figures.

Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) boss George Kinoti further revealed that the suspect had fled and police had launched a manhunt for him.

According to Kinoti, investigations uncovered that Chacha used the Murang'a representative's national identification number to register fake phone numbers which were then used to conduct the scam.

"He used an ID number of a former MP to register an M-Pesa account in the name of Sabina Wanjiku Chege. He did this in Donholm and we have all the details.

"Police have in the last week been trying to get Chacha but it has been in vain. Instead, he has switched off his five mobile phones and gone into hiding," Kinoti revealed, urging the suspect to surrender.

The DCI boss added that the attendant who registered the four numbers was in custody and would be arraigned in court on March 26.

The scheme was unravelled by Ms Chege who raised the concern during a parliamentary session as the MPs discussed the Cybercrimes Bill.

"Those who sent the money saw that the M-Pesa number had been registered under Sabina Wanjiku Chege. That is why they did not suspect anything.

"It wasn't until former MP Jakoyo Midiwo asked me about it the following day that I learnt of it. Many other people had been sent the same message," the Murang'a legislator narrated.
