Starehe MP Charles Njagua "Jaguar" Loses Court Battle to Governor Mike Sonko

Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Njagua "Jaguar" on Monday lost a court case against Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

The MP had moved to court seeking to quash the Governor's order that banned bodaboda operators from accessing the Central Business District (CBD).

Governor Sonko had issued the edict following a series of alarming muggings within the nation's capital.

Jaguar, soon after moved to court seeking to have the order revoked after accusing the Governor of making a decision without consulting relevant stakeholders.

According to the legislator, Sonko's decision was "ill-informed, unilaterally made and based on irrelevant considerations".

He further pleaded on behalf of the motorcycle operators, arguing that Sonko's order would leave them without a source of income.

"The bodaboda ban has caused a great public outcry as it has stripped many individuals of their noble source of livelihood, therefore, leaving many to wallow in joblessness and poverty in this hard economic times," the MP's lawyer, Duncan Okatch argued.

High Court Judge Roselyn Aburii ruled that the MP had not provided evidence that the bodaboda operators had been affected by the order.

Following the dismissal of the court case, the Governor's directive is expected to kick in. Cyclers caught going against the rule will be arrested, heavily fined and will lose their motorcycles.
