IG Joseph Boinnet's First Speech After Being Sentenced

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Friday made his first speech since the much talked about Miguna Miguna saga that saw him and other senior government officials fined after defying court orders.

The IG, as well as Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has not spoken on the matter with the only statements coming from Immigration Department and Communications Director Mwenda Njoka.

Addressing the press on Friday, Boinnet steered clear of the issue and instead assured Kenyans of safety during the Easter season.

He asserted: "As police, we have put in place measures to ensure all Kenyans enjoy this season in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility."

Boinnet exclaimed that the force has focused their security on the highways which according to him will have many Kenyans on transit for the season.

He also called on Kenyans to be careful while driving adding that they should ensure that they have road-worthy vehicles.

The police boss further noted: "There will be an increased presence of traffic police on the roads, especially on the major roads."

His statement comes in the wake of heavy criticism towards him from across both political and non-governmental organisations divide following the deportation of NRM self-declared general on Wednesday night.

Boinnet, Matiang'i and Immigration PS Gordon Kihalangwa were on Thursday ordered to pay a fine of Ksh200,000 that will be deducted from their salaries for the next month by Judge Odunga.

Delivering the ruling at Milimani Law Courts, Odunga wondered why the government officials had failed to show up in court or get in touch with their lawyers, describing it as a 'display of arrogance'.

"The respondents are in charge of security systems in the country, if they have no knowledge of the events that have been widely covered by the media then they do not deserve to hold such office," Odunga stated.
