Activist Goes on Hunger Strike over Miguna Miguna's Deportation

A human rights activist in Kisumu has gone on a hunger strike in an attempt to pile pressure on the government to comply with court orders issued to facilitate the return of Miguna Miguna.

Boniface Akumu is on a cause to not only root for the return of the exiled lawyer but also to promote peaceful protests in the region.

For the third day without food, the activist maintained that his actions would help bring forth peaceful protests since the county is known for violent protests whenever there is political discontent.

Akumu vowed to continue with his strike until the government showed respect for the rule of law and brought Miguna Miguna back to the country.

He maintained that he last had a meal on Thursday last week before he embarked on his hunger strike which he stated his family supported.

The activist remarked that he was motivated by what he termed as the government’s continued disobedience to the courts and rule of law after senior government officials failed to abide by court directives in the case facingMiguna.

Akumu stated: “I do not care even if I die of hunger. I have been very unhappy with the way the state has been abusing the rule of law.”

He maintained that lawyer Miguna Miguna's second deportation to Dubai was the last straw after he saw videos of police roughing him up and forcing him into a plane, in plain disregard of his rights.

Akumu maintained he was relentless in his quest to force the government to comply with the rule of law even if his health is affected.

“We cannot continue living like this where the constitution is not respected at all and our rights as Kenyans are also not respected,” the activist stated.
