Raila Odinga Receives Message From British PM Theresa May

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga on Monday received a message from British Prime Minister Theresa May that was relayed by UK envoy to Kenya Nic Hailey.

Hailey revealed that the Harambee house handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 9 had caught May's attention and she sent congratulations to the opposition boss for taking the unprecedented step.

"The handshake with President Kenyatta was a great show of leadership. It was noticed by my Prime Minister and the government in London.

"I'm here to deliver congratulations from the PM and her government," Hailey is quoted as telling Raila according to his spokesperson Dennis Onyango.

On his social media pages, Raila stated that they had 'candid discussions on pertinent issues affecting our nation'.

Pressure has been mounting on Raila and President Kenyatta to unveil details of the implementation of an agreement to resolve issues of negative ethnicity, lack of inclusiveness, lack of national ethos, electoral injustice and divisive elections, devolution, corruption and insecurity.

Among those who have raised questions on the deal are Raila's allies such as Siaya Senator James Orengo and Busia Senator Amos Wako.

Wako, a former Attorney General, has called on the lawyers tasked with crafting the deal Paul Mwangi and Martin Kimani to present a framework to the people as soon as possible.

β€œIt is almost one month since you issued the statement and neither the programme has been rolled out nor launched,” Wako wrote in a letter to President Kenyatta and Raila.

Orengo, on the other hand, dismissed speculation that he is out to scuttle the deal by setting conditions President Kenyatta must fulfill for the pact to be considered genuine.

Speaking over the weekend, Orengo maintained that President Kenyatta had to compensate victims of the violence witnessed after the 2017 polls as well as guarantee the smooth return of self-styled National Resistance Movement (NRM) General Miguna Miguna.
