Senior Counsel Paul Muite describe Matiba as a man of principle who fought for equality in the country.

"Matiba suffered a stroke because of the torture he went through in 1990. He paid with his life, he paid with his health and his wealth," he stated during an interview with KTNNews.

He was 85 years old at the time of his passing.

Muranga Governor Mwangi Wa Iria through his FaceBook mourned Matiba describing him a revolutionary and spirited leader.

"His fight, contribution and commitment towards a better republic can neither be redacted nor be ignored. Because they hang like a halo in our nation's history. We can only repay him by remaining true to the ideals he so much believed in and worked for," he wrote.

His sentiments were shared by Majority leader Aden Duale who wrote: "It is with profound grief and sorrow that I have learned the untimely demise of a great leader Hon. Kenneth Matiba. He played a crucial role in the political development of the second liberation. May his soul rest in peace."

Matiba had been dogged by ill-health stemming from his 1990 imprisonment.

In 2017, the Former Cabinet Minister was awarded Ksh504 Million as settlement for a case against the Government of Kenya as compensation for his detention and torture by the State in 1990.

The figure was later revised to Ksh945 Million after it emerged that there was an error in the calculation.
