IEBC Commissioners Resignation Caused By Chebukati - Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr on Monday stated that the wrangles at the IEBC leading to the resignation of three commissioners were caused by Chairman Wafula Chabukati's failure to implement parliamentary recommendations at the institution.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke the Wiper legislator stated that Chebukati failed to restructure the IEBC secretariat as advised by the Assembly.

"In 2016, the Joint Select Committee on Matters Relating to the IEBC recommended disciplinary action against Officials who were found culpable at the time including Ezra Chiloba and James Muhati.

"Furthermore, we advised for a better structure to be established at IEBC that would not allow overlapping of duties and undue interference between the Commissioners and the Secretariat," he explained.

He added that the commission as it was constituted at the time would still result in the same issues experienced during the 2013 elections because none of the fundamental problems had been addressed.

"This fall-out at IEBC, we could see it coming from miles away which is why we made the recommendations," he told Kenyans.co.ke on the phone.

Mutula Jr further called for an audit to be conducted to get to the root of the problems at IEBC.

"The Commissioners who have resigned should not be paid for the remainder of their term. A special audit should be requested by Parliament. An audit of the electronic systems will reveal more snakes," he conveyed.

Earlier on Monday, Vice Chair Consolata Maina, commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat resigned citing lack of leadership at the institution.

"The Commission Chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in difficult times and gives directions when needed," declared the officials.

On his part, Chebukati issued a statement relaying that he learnt of the resignation through the media.

In a statement released by the body, he stated: "I learnt from media reports that three of my commissioners have resigned today.

"I am yet to receive formal communication on this matter. The commission will give a comprehensive statement at an appropriate time."
