Embu Leaders Warn Gov Ann Waiguru Over Mwea Scheme

Embu leaders have warned Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru after she claimed that the Mwea settlement scheme belonged to her county.

The leaders told Waiguru that the move could incite residents to violence as they maintained that the 44,000-acre scheme was squarely in Embu.

Senator Njeru Ndwiga led the leaders in cautioning Waiguru noting that her opposition to the allocation and demarcation of land tp 7,200 beneficiaries could worsen an already volatile situation.

Conflict between squatters resisting eviction and officials has already seen a District Commissioner and 3 others injured.

Ndwiga stated that Waiguru was ignorant of the facts and asked her to conduct some research.

He stated that Ngariama Settlement scheme reverted to Kirinyaga after it was hived from Embu County.

"We have heard very unfortunate statements coming from the Governor.

"Let her dig into history and she will understand which scheme between Mwea and Ngariama belongs to who," Ndwiga stated.

He was backed by several MCAs who echoed his sentiments.

"Mwea scheme is therefore rightfully, politically and historically within Embu while Ngariama is theirs. When they sub-divided Ngariama ranch, we laid no claim to it," Ndwiga asserted.

In an earlier statement, Waiguru had categorically opposed the allocation maintaining that it was against an active court order.

“Mwea settlement scheme land belongs to the people of Kirinyaga and the Mwea settlement scheme residents.

“All the purported title deeds issued in respect of the Mwea settlement scheme are invalid because due process was not followed. Titles were produced before demarcation and allocation of land,” she wrote.
