Makerere University Official Arrested Over Alleged Sexual Assault on Kenyan Student

Edward Kisuze, the Senior Administrative Assistant in the Academic Registrar's Department of Makerere University was arrested by Ugandan police on Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a female Kenyan student.

Kisuze was detained at the Wandegeya Police Station as law enforcement officers launched investigations.

He had earlier been suspended by the University after the revelations sparked a massive public outcry.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof William Bazeyo stated that Kisuze's explanation on the incident had been unsatisfactory and declared that a probe committee would be set up to establish what exactly took place.

He noted that Kisuze would be on half pay while he served his suspension and asked him to hand over all university property.

“I hereby suspend you from university service on half pay with immediate effect to allow a smooth investigation into the matter. You are strongly advised to desist from any access to the Senate building premises and interactions with students of Makerere University until investigations are completed,” his letter dated April 17 read in part.

The Kenyan female student lodged official complaints with the Police and the University eventually leading to Kisuze's arrest.

The student told Police in a statement that Kisuze sexually harassed her in Room 507 at the institution's Senate building.

She took a selfie that was widely circulated on social media showing Kisuze on his knees with his head between her legs while her skirt was pulled up.

The student explained that she took the selfie to serve as evidence because the room had no cameras.
