Linus Kaikai Replaced by Churchill Otieno as Editors' Guild Chair

Royal Media Services (RMS) Director of Strategy and Innovation Linus Kaikai has been replaced by Churchill Otieno as Chairperson of the Editors' Guild.

Otieno received the majority of votes cast in an election held at a Nairobi hotel on Saturday.

He is the Digital Managing Editor at Nation Media Group (NMG) and takes over from Kaikai who until recently was the Managing editor at NTV.

In his acceptance speech, Otieno stated that the guild needed to 'get the house in order' as he highlighted the influence they had as the media.

"Many tend to think power is only in government but there is power in the private sector and in people who hold different positions in society. Many of them are not in government," he stated.

Kaikai took to Twitter to acknowledge the end of his time in the role, thanking the Editors for suppporting him.

"I THANK the Kenya Editors Guild @KenyaEditors for the opportunity I had to serve as Chairman. It was truly an honor. I exit, proud of our collective endeavors in the interest of true journalism. I wish the Editors well in the journey ahead," he wrote.

Kaikai dominated headlines after he expressed strong opposition to a demand from the state that local stations do not cover the January 30 swearing-in of Raila Odinga as the People's President.

NTV went on to broadcast the Uhuru Park event, and the government promptly switched off tranmission for local channels.

NTV along with Citizen and KTN, however, continued to broadcast the event on online platforms.
