IEBC Denies Reports on Wafula Chebukati's Resignation

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has termed as fake a widely circulated memo indicating that embattled Chairman Wafula Chebukati had resigned.

In a brief statement, the commission stated: "We wish to state that the memo circulating on social media that @IEBCKenya Chairman @WChebukati has resigned is FAKE."

The memo in question claimed that Chebukati had resigned citing 'external forces' that were in control at the commission.

Lawyer Donald Kipkorir also took to social media to reveal details of his correspondence with Chebukati on the matter, pledging support for a bill to combat fake news.

"IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has instructed me that the letter below is FAKE .. It’s why I fully support Hon. Adan Duale in enacting Anti-Fake News Bill.

"Kenyans who specialize in Fake News & Forgeries ought to be in Prison where they will provide free Labour to build Kenya," he wrote.

The statement comes as pressure piles on Chebukati alongside commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu to resign.

The commission was left without quorum to transact business following the resignation of commissioners Margaret Mwachanya, Connie Maina and Paul Kurgat earlier this month and that of Roselyne Akombe ahead of the 2017 Presidential election.

A 93-page report authored by Akombe and dispatched to Chebukati 3 months after her resignation recently surfaced revealing details of a deeply divided commission.

Akombe stated that she was afraid to take meals served in the boardroom and admitted to lying at a press conference to save the commission's image.

Here is the memo that has since been confirmed as fake:
