Chebukati Exposes Ezra Chiloba's Illegal Activity

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has lashed out at the poll body's embattled CEO Ezra Chiloba for engaging in what he terms illegal activity.

Responding to a case filed by Chiloba last week, Chebukati stated that the CEO illegally obtained confidential information from the commission before he filed his case.

He further added that Mr Chiloba signed a contract prohibiting him from instituting legal proceedings against IEBC while he is still employed, without prior approval of the chairman.

“This petition is directly prejudicial to the commission as it seeks prejudicial prayers against the commission.

"Importantly, there was no prior approval obtained from the IEBC chairman before instituting this petition. This petition, therefore, ought to be struck out with costs,” stated Chebukati through his lawyer Tom Ojienda.

He further states: “To this end, the applicants pray that the court expunges from its records the IEBC confidential information obtained illegally by the petitioner.”

This comes just a few days after former IEBC Commissioner Roselyne Akombe exposed how Chiloba put the brakes on multi-billion-shilling procurements on the pretext of time constraint, thereby ensuring they were directly sourced.

She further maintained that procurement at the IEBC was marred by corruption and listed the controversial acquisition of the KIEMS kits and hiring of a media company as among the many tenders that were wrapped in intrigues.

“There was a running joke that the only meetings which commission staff would attend on time were the tender evaluation committee meetings. The trend is the same when it comes to tenders at the constituency level,” Akombe remarked.

“There are several accusations bordering on violations of procurement laws that can only be addressed through independent investigations,” she added.

Akombe lamented that many issues at the commission relating to technology were clouded in secrecy and only handled by Chiloba and ICT Director James Muhati without accounting to the commissioners.

“The dominance of Safran/OT Morpho in all aspects of the commission's work is an aspect worth in-depth investigations, including their role in the 2017 election,” the report stated.
