Renovations at Lang'ata Crematorium Ahead of Kenneth Matiba's Final Send-Off

Daily Nation on Thursday released video footage of the Lang'ata Crematorium that was seemingly under renovation.

The crematorium was being spruced up ahead of the planned cremation of former politician Kenneth Matiba, who is said to have requested his family to do so long before he passed away.

Kenyans who saw the video footage raised concerns over the apparent last-minute rush at the facility while others lamented that the crematorium had been neglected.

Here are some of the comments that were shared.

The Late Matiba was scheduled for cremation in a private ceremony attended by family and a few invited guests at the facility on Friday.

His body was on Thursday night flown back into Nairobi from Murang'a county where throngs of citizens and dignitaries attended a memorial service at Ihura Stadium.

The former Kenyan Minister for transport is reported to have refused to be buried claiming that he did not care for "dancing parties and Harambees" that would normally accompany funerals in the African setup.

"After all, the Kikuyu traditionally never buried their dead. They used to take the bodies into the forest to be devoured by hyenas. Was that not wisdom," he is quoted to have remarked.

He is also quoted to have stated that he would have preferred to be buried by his own family.

"All other people, including me, should be buried by their families when they die," he was quoted.
