Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya Criticized for Renovated Structure in His County

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya on Friday received strong criticism from netizens on Facebook after a photo of one of his county projects leaked.

The photo showed an elderly woman standing in front of a mud house with iron sheet roofing.

The skirting of the roof bore the writings: "Constructed by county government of Kakamega Shelter initiative – financial year 2017 – 2018."

The tag irritated those who viewed the photo with some suggesting that the governor ought to have constructed a decent, permanent structure instead of the mud house.

Commentators who seemed to have been in the know concerning the project explained that the county administration had merely roofed the structure after the initial roof caved in.

Other commentators urged the critics to consider that the owner of the house might have been only comfortable with the roofing and not a new house.

Some others who commented were outraged that the county government had used the unfortunate incident to gain publicity.

Those appaled by the writings called on the governor to quit his alleged thirst for publicity and pull down the writings.

The debate came up after a week-long national conference that was hosted by the county and officiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta, deputy president William Ruto and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The 2018 Devolution Conference was also rocked by a scandal involving Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri who was busted having an extra-marital affair.
