Wilson Sossion Rubbishes Move to Remove Him as KNUT Secretary-General

Kenyan National Union of Teachers (KNUT) boss Wilson Sossion on Tuesday dismissed the plot to remove him as the union's secretary-general.

Speaking during Labour Day celebrations at the Uhuru Park, the nominated MP insisted that he is the secretary general of the teachers union despite his suspension by the body's executive council.

Sossion reiterated: "I am the Secretary General of KNUT, duly elected by the teachers of Kenya."

In a majority poll, the KNUT National Executive Committee on Monday voted 22 members against 2 to suspend Sossion.

The committee further appointed the nominated MP's deputy Hesbon Otieno to take over in an acting capacity.

However, addressing the journalists after Sossion's speech at Uhuru Park, KNUT Chairman Wycliffe Omucheyi asserted that the move to suspend Sossion was anchored on the union's constitution.

Additionally, he urged the legislator to respect the council's decision and step aside.

Omucheyi also accused Sossion of disrespecting the NEC's decision to suspend him on two occasions last month, claiming that they have a right to take disciplinary action against any member.

According to the union members, elected leaders are always urged to quit trade unions by the government and the embattled secretary general is no exception.

Sossion told Kenyans.co.ke that he would only leave office if the teachers voted him out.

He further pointed a finger at politicians who he alleged sponsored some of the teachers to push for his removal as the union's secretary general.
