Musalia Mudavadi Declares Support for Raila's Push for Constitutional Reforms

Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has declared his support for NASA leader Raila Odinga's push for constitutional amendments on condition that the referendum will cure most issues affecting Kenyans.

Speaking in Kisumu, Mudavadi noted that the Bomas Draft is a hybrid of both presidential and parliamentary system of governance is capable of dealing with most of the "country's ills."

According to the NASA principal, the draft will allow the participation of political parties in national executive through coalition building.

Additionally, Mudavadi called on Kenyans to reflect on the original Bomas Draft as the calls for referendum gains momentum in the country.

He also stated that he supports a referendum that ensures minorities are included in the government as opposed to governments ran by "tyranny of numbers."

However, Mudavadi called on the Opposition leader to work with all the relevant leaders to be able to frame the question of the referendum in time to allow Kenyans to know whey they should take part in the national exercise.

The ANC leader further asserted that there is a need for a referendum but clauses that need amendments must be made clear to the citizens.

On Thursday, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed noted that although the country may hold a referendum, it is not a priority now, adding that it is likely to take about three years for the leaders to come up with a referendum question.

"It’s too early to talk about the referendum. This is like putting the cart before the horse. The referendum will be the last thing in the cards. We have to identify issues first before thinking of the plebiscite.

"In my opinion, a referendum is not foreseeable in the next three years. The earliest can be towards the end of 2021,” Junet, who is known to be one of Raila's close aide, commented.
