Governor Mike Sonko Reacts to D+ Score on TIFA Poll on Performance

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday responded to the Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) poll that graded his performance at 44% (D+) as compared to his counterparts Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o who both scored above average.

Governor Sonko welcomed the poll results in a sarcastic twist where he also hit out at the pollsters over a past inaccurate survey.

"I’m sure you have all seen the rankings where we have been given the last position by TIFA.

"We accept that position but don’t forget that these same people in 2017 predicted that I would never become the governor of Nairobi but here we are," the governor stated.

The governor went on to defend his administration outlining that the first months in office had been consumed with the fight against cartels and corruption.

"Those who say we have not been working should take note that the first thing I did when I got here was to audit the system through a company not affiliated to the county government, KPMG.

"KPMG gave a very good report that there was Ksh21 Billion funds could not be accounted for.

"Today, from Ksh7 – Ksh10 Million revenue collection daily, we now have over Ksh100 Million every day and we are paying workers and officials from that collection," the governor outlined.

The governor delivered the statement during a press conference at City Hall where he was flanked by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, Transport CS James Macharia, Environment CS Keriako Tobiko, Lands CS Farida Karoney and county executive council members.

The top officials were speaking on Tuesday as they briefed residents on their 30-day achievements as the Nairobi Regeneration Project.

"We are here to also correct that wrong perception that the Nairobi County government is not working. That is a lie.

"Governor Sonko has had a difficult task of dealing with challenges created in the past 20-30 years and those will not be resolved in a day. I can confirm that there is indeed political will from the top to resolve these issues," CS Balala conveyed.
