KNUT Acting Secretary-General Hesbon Otieno Moves to Court to Reinstate Wilson Sossion

Acting Kenya National Union of Teacher (KNUT) Secretary-General Hesbon Otieno on Thursday moved to court in an effort to reinstate Wilson Sossion to his post at KNUT.

Mr Otieno sought the court's indulgence in setting aside initial orders issued by the Registrar of Trade Unions that deregistered Sossion from the union.

The acting secretary-general, who is also serving as the CEO, told the court that he was unable to discharge his duties.

"There is absurdity and ambiguity in the orders extended as, by virtue of the registration of my name as the acting secretary general, I’m legally responsible for any action taken by the office of SG," he stated.

Otieno further stated that the National Executive Council (NEC) had been crippled by Sossion's departure as it was still under constituted.

The KNUT official further asked the court to grant the stay orders on a temporary basis before the application is heard and determined.

"The court be pleased to set aside extending the orders issued on 10th May," the application read in part.

Otieno also faulted the court for crippling the union in its requirement to provide a register to certify the change of officials.

"The said register can only be produced upon request and the same could only be availed to the court upon such request being made," he stated.

Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Maureen Onyango had argued that there was no evidence to show that Sossion had been removed from the post.

Sossion was later barred from gaining access to his office when he attempted to report for work.
