3 Cabinet Secretaries, AG Paul Kihara Wanted in Court Over Ksh2 Billion Project

Three Cabinet Secretaries (CS) and Attorney General Paul Kihara have been summoned by Murang'a High Court over the Ksh2 billion Mitumbiri garbage landfill project.

CS James Macharia (Transport), Keriako Tobiko (Environment) and Simon Chelugui (Water and Sanitation) and the AG are expected to explain to the Court the controversy surrounding the project.

This is after activist Benmark Muriikwa Nganga sued the government over the contravention of fundamental rights and freedoms of residents in the project.

The controversial landfill project is expected to serve Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Murang’a and Machakos counties in recycling waste and burying biodegradable waste collected.

The order issued by Judge J.G Kemmei and marked as urgent further put on hold the project until proper public participation is done.

According to the application filed by Muriikwa, public participation was not carried out before the project kicked off.

Besides, the activist cites that there are no concrete compensation plans for those expected to be displaced when the landfill project kicks off.

The sanitary landfill project in Mitumbiri, Maragua Constituency is expected to cover 33 acres of the 50 acres bought by the National Government.

The remaining 27 acres are expected to be used to establish a buffer zone for the garbage collection and disposition project.

Leaders and residents from the region opposed the project demanding assurance that it will be environmental friendly unlike the current case for Dandora Dumpsite in Nairobi's Eastlands area.
