DP William Ruto Speaks on Ksh9 Billion NYS Scandal

Deputy President William Ruto on Friday broke his silence over the ongoing probe into the National Youth Service (NYS) Ksh9 Billion scandal.

The DP called for speedy action against those involved in the NYS theft, as well as officials and brokers in maize plus fertilizer saga at National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) in accordance with the law.

On his Twitter handle, the DP posted: "Relevant agencies are directed to apply their mandate and spare no effort to investigate, prosecute individuals who have misappropriated public funds, and if found culpable, the courts should dispense swift justice."

He further urged holders of public office to uphold high standards of integrity in the wake of the series of corruption scandals.

"We must shoulder the responsibility of public office by being good stewards of resources and ensuring value for money," he tweeted.

Ruto conveyed his remarks in his address on Friday while attending a graduation ceremony at the St Paul's Nyabururu Teachers Training College, Kisii County. He was received at the county by Governor James Ongwae.

Kenyans on social media spent a larger part of the day calling for the resignation of both the DP and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Members of the public were further enraged by the presidency over their silence on the matter despite the magnitude of the losses that have been reported.

Public Service and Youth Principal Secretary Lillian Mbogo appeared before the National Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Friday and denied the disappearance of the funds.

She argued that the Auditor General would have noted the missing funds prior to the emergence of the scandal.
