How Raila's Visit to Harambee House Caused Panic - Willy Mutunga

Former Chief Justice (CJ) Willy Mutunga has revealed how NASA leader Raila Odinga's visit to Harambee House for the famous handshake had caused panic among the President's staff.

In an op-ed published in The East African Review, Mutunga recalled how the swearing-in of Raila Odinga as the People’s President had confirmed him as a leader of the new national opposition with a following to be reckoned with.

"Proving he had the capacity to mobilize millions could not be taken lightly or ignored," Mutunga elaborated while indicating that his swearing-in nearly ushered in a new dawn.

According to Mutunga, the swearing-in had sent shivers to the highest office in the land and Raila could no longer be underestimated.

"Apparently, the staff at the Office of the President who saw Odinga walk-in feared he had decided to physically evict President Uhuru from his official seat!" the former CJ revealed.

Mutunga opined that he believes that the government noted how Raila had resurrected the hopes of the people and the heralding of a new "liberation"

"Jubilee regime saw this and negotiations started soon after with meetings booked in order to "maintain the peace"." Mutunga indicated.

He further expressed his disappointment after Raila abandoned the course after joining the "Building Bridges to a New Kenyan Nation" initiative.

"The narrative had been that the National Super Alliance (NASA) was the lesser of the two political evils, but the truth is they are both pawns in the hands of the imperialisms of the West and East," he notes.

"Indeed, their shared vision of looting the country can never set them apart" he quips while maintaining that by settling for the handshake: "Raila had bequeathed Kenya with the last betrayal."

The former President of the Supreme Court of Kenya opined that the last handshake will be: "when an alternative political leadership that can imagine our freedom and emancipation takes the reins of political power in our country."
