President Uhuru Kenyatta Orders New Round of Vetting After Mega-Scandals

President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered a new round of vetting for high-ranking members of the Executive arm of government following a series of highly publicized corruption scandals.

Uhuru, reportedly angered by the widely circulated reports on corruption in several ministries, has tasked a special multi-agency team to oversee the vetting process.

Officials of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) are an integral part of the team while the Deputy Head of Public Service Wanyama Musiambo has personally been tasked with co-ordinating the President's renewed fight against corruption.

Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and heads of scandal-hit parastatals are among those the team is set to look into.

Unlike the vetting ususally undertaken in the National Assembly, the officials will not be active participants in the process.

The President will receive files on the dealings of officials and other details of their time in public office after which he will decide the next course of action.

The vetting could go on until June and might result in a shake-up of the executive.

Concerned with the impact the runaway corruption could have on his legacy, President Uhuru is expected to take decisive action that could see several heads roll.

State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu on Saturday avoided questions on the recent scandals and the President's plan.

Among the scandal that have shocked the country in recent weeks are a Sh9 Billion scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS), a Sh1.9 Billion maize scandal at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and another at Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).

Youth Principal Secretary Lilian Mbogo Omollo and NYS Director-General Richard Ndubai have already stepped aside as a result of the NYS scandal.
