4 Killed in Grisly Road Accident in Meru County

Four people were killed in a road accident on Tuesday in Meru County.

Meru County Police commander David Kirui confirmed the accident which involved a lorry and matatu at Kariene.

"The lorry was heading to Meru while the matatu was heading to Nairobi," Meru police commander Kirui stated.

The police commander confirmed that seven people were taken to the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital and the facility in Kariene.

Kirui stated that the cause of the accident was not established immediately but an investigation was underway.

He also could not confirm the number of passengers who were in the matatu when the accident occurred.

Meanwhile, the latest data from the department of traffic showed that over 1,200 people have died from road accidents in the country since the year began.

The data showed that the number of those killed had slightly declined and stands at 1,279 against 1,293 in the same period last year.

Mary Omari, the traffic department's commissioner in charge of operations noted that motorcycle operators and pedestrians accounted for the highest numbers.

She revealed that 489 pedestrians, 275 passengers, 242 motorcycle operators, 107 pavilion passengers, and 25 cyclists died in the period under study.
