Four Governors Could be Charged Over Corruption - EACC

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Halakhe Haqo on Wednesday stated that four governors are likely to be arraigned in court next week over corruption-related charges.

According to the Mr. Haqo, the commission has pieced together an airtight evidence to nail the four County bosses together with two officials from other independent commission.

Additionally, Haqo mentioned that the anti-corruption body has already sent files of the suspects to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji for review.

The CEO affirmed that should the DPP agree with the charges held against the suspects they could be arrested and presented to the court as early next week.

He mentioned this while appearing before the Senate's Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights Committee which had summoned him (Haqo) together with the EACC's Chairman Archbishop Eliud Wabukala.

The Commission's top officials were to give the Members of Parliament (MPs) a report on its achievements on the war against corruption.

However, the commission told the committee that they haven't been able to do much since it is working with very little resources.

Haqo also announced that in the past one year, the commission has been able to successfully prosecute 35 cases with 31 going for convictions and four acquittals.

The EACC boss and Wabukhala attributed the low conviction rate for cases to the inadequacies of the special anti-corruption magistrates to effectively and expeditiously deal with cases of corruption and economic crimes pending in courts.

"There are only two judges appointed to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes division of the High Court. In addition, the judges and magistrates dealing with corruption cases are also allocated other cases,” Haqo told the committee.
