Seven Former Cabinet Secretaries yet to Report to Their New Posts

Seven former Cabinet Secretaries who were appointed as Kenyan ambassadors in January by President Uhuru Kenyatta are yet to report to their workstations.

Six months down the line, the group has not left the country since the state is yet to provide some of the required documents needed for their departure.

The seven are Phyllis Kandie (UNESCO), Jacob Kaimenyi (Belgium), Lawrence Lenayapa (Netherlands), Judi Wakhungu (France), Hassan Wario (Austria), Willy Bett (India), Dan Kazungu (Tanzania) and Cleopa Mailu (UN, Geneva).

Ms Kandie’s initial appointment to Belgium was swapped with Kaimenyi’s UNESCO following a directive by the President.

They are yet to receive ‘agreemos’ from the countries they are supposed to report to which has led to confusion in the diplomatic circles.

An agreemo is a memorandum from one country to another accepting the appointment of an ambassador.

“The envoys have been camping in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs waiting to know their fate but they have been directed to wait for the agreemos. State House is also yet to give them the credentials to carry,” a source from the ministry disclosed to the Standard.

Given that envoys are representatives of the Head of State, the president is required to provide them with credentials to carry to their work posts.

The group was approved after being vetted by the Parliament in February.

They also underwent a one-month training at the Foreign Service Academy from March to April.
