Nairobi County Assembly Reject Miguna Miguna's Nomination

Nairobi County Assembly were not able to vet and approve Miguna Miguna's nomination as deputy governor.

This is after County Speaker Beatrice Elachi rejected Governor Mike Sonko deputy nominee, citing issues on dual citizenship.

“Pursuant to Standing Order number one of the Assembly, the name of the nominee be referred back to the appointing authority for further validation,” Elachi stated.

Elachi maintained that other required documents, certificate of good conduct, Higher Education Loans Board clearance certificate and Kenya Revenue Authority compliance certificate, were not provided.

Sonko had submitted Miguna's name stating: “I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor.”

Miguna's nomination was marred with controversy after several Nairobi County leaders and voters opposed it.

Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja expressed disbelief about Miguna’s nomination and seemed pretty sure the lawyer won’t have the job.

Sakaja stated: “Miguna will not become the Deputy Governor of Nairobi. Take that to the bank.”

A voter sued governor Mike Sonko for nominating Miguna Miguna as his deputy.

John Waigi Migwi claimed that Sonko submitted Miguna's name for vetting when he doesn't qualify to be the deputy governor.

"The nominee does not meet the relevant qualifications for vetting and approval to fill the vacancy in the office of deputy governor as he, not a Kenyan citizen nor a member of Jubilee party on which Sonko was elected," Migwi stated.
