Court Told How Kenyan Rugby Player Mike Okombe Died Over Truth and Dare

A Nakuru court was on Thursday told how Kenyan rugby player Mike Okombe was stabbed to death by his girlfriend Maryanne Mumbi following an argument that arose from a game of truth and dare.

Vincent Omondi, who is a witness and also a brother to the second accused - Calvin Okoth - told the court that Okombe became enraged and wanted to fight everyone in the compound.

They had gathered for a birthday party organized by Okoth for his daughter on November 4, 2017 at their Kiamunyi home.

Omondi testified that the argument forced others at the party to leave Okombe in the living room, but he followed them outside and tried to attack Mumbi.

“We were seated round a table in the dining room playing a game of asking and answering questions. An argument ensued, forcing some of us to move out and leave the deceased in the house. He, however, followed us and tried to beat Ms Mumbi, before they were separated,” he stated.

Omondi went on to reveal that as he held back his brother from fighting Okombe, the deceased charged towards Mumbi who stabbed her in the chest.

“As I was holding back my brother from fighting the deceased, I saw Okombe stand up and charge towards Ms Mumbi, who in turn picked a knife and stabbed him in his chest.

"Mr Okombe turned round holding his chest before he fell down. When he turned upside down, we were shocked to see him bleeding,” he stated.

He explained that after initially being stopped from beating Mumbi, Okombe got into a heated argument with Eric Mochache, who decided to step away and go to the living room where Omondi followed him.

“Mr Mochache and I decided to load a game on the Play station as the rest kept quarrelling outside. After a short while, I saw Ms Mumbi enter the kitchen and come out with a knife and a tong. She then went outside," Omondi stated.

According to Omondi, they heard a commotion outside and found Okoth beating Okombe with a club before the deceased pushed him out of the way and charged towards Mumbi who stabbed him.

He was rushed to Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mumbi's lawyer, however, questioned the credibility of Omondi's testimony given he admitted to have been drinking at the party.

The hearing will proceed on September 26, 2018.
