Kalonzo Musyoka Urges Jubilee MPs to Pass Laws for Enforcement of Lifestyle Audit

Recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that all public officers undergo a lifestyle audit as he continues to accelerate the war against graft. However, there's a major loophole that could see Members of Parliament evade it.

On Tuesday, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka stated that the exercise would only be successful if it had the legal backing in the constitution - a role that only parliament could facilitate by passing necessary the laws.

The Opposition leader urged MPs allied to Jubilee to pass necessary laws for the enforcement of the audit for all government officials without which the initiative would fail.

"To actualize the proposed lifestyle audit on public and state officers, there is a need for the establishment of enabling legislation. Outside of law, it will be hard to carry out a credible lifestyle audit," he stated on Tuesday.

He further proposed for the involvement of reputable international audit firms to work closely with Kenyan agencies in order to deal with theft of public resources.

"We have had too much political deceit. This time hakuna kutapatapa, wala kudhania dhania. Hakuna uungwana tena (This time there is no guesswork or doubts about fairness). We cannot be taken for a ride," Kalonzo added.

After the Head of State made the announcement earlier in the week, Jubilee MPs came out strongly opposing the proposal.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech questioned the legal frameworks backing the process and opined that it would fail as it had become personalized.

“What we are witnessing in the name of fighting corruption is only good for the public gallery. It’s a selective effort aimed at ensuring that the real criminals go scot free. Nothing substantive will come out of it,” Cherargei stated.

On the other hand, Raila Odinga welcomed the move adding that the audit was good for the country.

“What is good for Kenyans, is good for ODM. Lifestyle audit on leaders is good for the country. We are in it fully. Personally, I am ready for it.” Mr Odinga told elected leaders in Mombasa on Monday.
