Former US President Barack Obama is set to be installed by the Luo Council of Elders as a Luo elder.

The Secretary-General to the council Adera Osawa indicated that the plans are on high gear to fete Obama during his upcoming visit in July.

According to Osawa, the council has set a committee in Nyang'oma Village Kogelo, Siaya who were deliberating on a befitting gift for Obama.

Among the items that will be handed to Obama during the ceremony include a spear, a traditional three-legged stool and a walking stick.

The Secretary further indicated that they had been looking forward to Obama's visit to his paternal home village during his last visit but his schedule didn't allow.

We are consulting on what to present to our son because he is a respected person all over the world and we must accord him the respect that he deserves.

The Secretary-General was among the elders who met Obama during his 2005 visit as the Illinois Senator.

During the visit, Osawa indicates that he presented Obama with a special stick: "The stick that we gave him was a sign of a blessing ahead of his campaigns and that made him win the presidency for a record two terms."

The 87-year-old Osawa further revealed that the committee had communicated their intention to the US embassy and were waiting for feedback.

"We hope we will be incorporated in the programme. In two weeks time, we shall have gotten the response," Osawa noted.
