Mama Sarah Gives Update on Obama's Visit

Mama Sarah Obama, the grandmother to former US President Barack Obama has given an update on Obama's planned visit to Kenya on July 16.

Speaking to the Star on Saturday, Mama Sarah cast doubt on the certainty that Obama would visit K'Ogelo village in Siaya County during the scheduled 1-day visit.

"He (Obama) will be busy so I am not sure he will visit the village," Mama Sarah is quoted as stating.

She further opined that Obama would still be a government guest and not a village visitor hence may not be able visit his family.

Details about the anticipated visit have remained scanty with no official confirmation from the national government which is likely to be privy to the details.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, however, indicates that the former President will be in the country on July 16 before proceeding to South Africa where he will deliver the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg.

Dr Auma Obama, his half-sister, had indicated that Obama would preside over the opening of a sports and training centre in K'Ogelo.

Obama is also expected to hold talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta and is highly likely to meet opposition leaders including the National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

His return to Kenya in mid-July is likely an honour to a promise he made during a state visit in his second term in office.

"I will be back to Kenya next time, maybe not in a suit. I would also come with Malia and Sasha (his daughters). My family loves Kenya," he had promised.
