Important Event Barack Obama Will Officiate in Kenya

Former US President Barack Obama will return to Kenya in mid-July honouring a promise he made during a state visit in his second term in office.

It has now emerged that besides visiting his grandmother Mama Sarah Obama's home in K'Ogelo in Siaya County, Obama will equally preside over the opening of a sports and training centre in K'Ogelo.

The details of the event were divulged by Dr Auma Obama, his half-sister who indicated that the function will take place on July 16.

During the one-day visit, Obama is also expected to hold talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta and is highly likely to meet opposition leaders including the National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

Obama's official visit in July 2015 saw him address youth at Kasarani's Indoor Arena where he indicated: "We are connecting young people full of ideas who are not weighed down by ideas from the past."

He also gave a talk at Kenyatta University during the opening of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) forum.

The YALI program trains leaders on increasing support for entrepreneurship and bolstering networking and professional development.

Among other meetings, the visit also saw him lay a wreath at the August 7th Memorial Park in Nairobi which stands on the former US Embassy grounds which was bombed in 1998.

On the other hand, Auma has featured prominently during Obama's visits to Kenya including his maiden visit in 1988, when she picked him up from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in a battered Volkswagen Beetle.

Auma was with the government dignitaries who received Obama at the JKIA in 2015 where one of the most talked about scenes saw the two hug, exchange pleasantries, before riding away in the president’s official limousine - "The Beast".
